Personality:

In some ways, Chie is just your typical (maybe even a little stereotypical) teenage girl. She is friendly and outgoing, and always there to extend a hand to those in need of it, especially when it comes to her friends. She's always full of energy, frequently seen hopping from one foot to the other, and even when the chips are down she tries to lighten the mood. Her cooking skills are pretty horrendous (we can even say they're at literal poisoning levels) and she's not too incredibly book-smart, but she makes up for what she lacks with gusto. Even with all of her bravado, she is still capable of getting overwhelmed and scared - when the protagonist and Yosuke attempted to enter the TV world, they tied a rope around themselves and left the other end of it with Chie; however, as soon as they disappeared through the screen, the rope disconnected from them and left her in a panic, and when they finally returned she burst into tears. She's admitted to really disliking bugs, ghost stories creep her out, and thunderstorms make her uneasy.

The one thing that sets her apart from most other girls is her love of kung fu and all that has spawned from it. From a very young age, she became enamored with kung fu movies - Bruce Lee especially, whom she considers her idol. As a result of her love of all things kung fu, she developed a strong sense of justice. It started out with sticking up for elementary school classmates and progressed to getting into fights with bullies, at which point she taught herself Jeet Kune Do in order to protect others. She even began to choose aliases and slogans for herself, becoming a self-proclaimed avatar of justice. By the end of the game, she has her sights set on using this to become a police officer.

This same sense of justice is what ultimately began her friendship with Yukiko. As children, Chie had found Yukiko with a puppy, stating that she had ran away from home because her parents wouldn't let her keep him. Chie did her best to cheer Yukiko up and make her laugh, and even ended up taking in the dog at her own house so that Yukiko could see him whenever she wanted to, but seeing Yukiko so down and helpless made Chie want to protect her no matter what.

Shadow Chie: "Yukiko's sooo good looking... sooo fair-skinned... so feminine... She's the one all the guys drool over. When Yukiko looked at me with such jealousy... Man, did I get a charge out of that. Yukiko knows the score. She can't do anything if I'm not around... I'm better than her... Much, much better!"

Unfortunately, that desire to protect Yukiko eventually became dangerous. Yukiko is seen as the perfect girl - she's smart, she's pretty and has a lot of admirers, she gets good grades, and overall she's just... feminine, whereas Chie is generally seen as a brash, aggressive tomboy. Over time, Chie developed an inferiority complex from it, envying the attention that her best friend received. It was a feeling that she didn't like - Yukiko was her best friend, for crying out loud - so she took that feeling and compartmentalized it hard, vowing to be the best, most protective friend she could. Though she denied it to herself, being able to protect Yukiko and having Yukiko rely so heavily on her triggered feelings of superiority, and some dark part of her that she didn't want to acknowledge took enjoyment in the fact that even Miss Perfect Yukiko had her own worries and doubts. It sat and simmered like this on the back burner for years, until it all came to an ugly head when her Shadow Self manifested in Yukiko's dungeon, where she was forced to confront the ugly side of herself that she didn't want anyone to see. After a bit of a struggle, Chie was finally able to admit to these feelings to herself and out loud, though she pressed that just because she had felt that way, it didn't mean that she didn't truly love Yukiko as her best friend.

Those problems - particularly the envy - are things that she has now committed to improve upon, but there are still other branches off of those same insecurities that will still take a good deal of work to unravel. Her femininity is something she holds dear, despite being seen as a tomboy because of the way she acts, though over time she has become much more confident in this and has begun dressing in more frilly, more feminine outfits. Even so, Chie still doesn't think very highly of herself, especially with Yukiko of all people as her best friend, and all the guys seem to fawn over her anyway. In reality, there is at least one guy that's interested in her, but her attitude is a little intimidating, so he just hasn't pursued anything. In the heat of the moment, her mouth tends to open before her brain can filter out what should or shouldn't be said, and her muscles work on just as quick a reflex, leading her to be a very kick-first-think-later type of girl. Especially with her guy friends, she has a tendency to get a little bossy, and she's not above kicking some shins - or higher - if she needs to. If Chie is shown any sign of interest or is flirted with, though, she actually gets pretty flustered, and has a hard time coming up with something to say. She's not used to being perceived in the same ways as Yukiko, and it just takes some getting used to.

And, of course, there's meat. You can't talk about Chie without mentioning her love of meat. Whether it's Aiya's beef bowl, the place that sells steak skewers that may not actually be beef (let's not think too hard about that one), or the food court at Junes courtesy of Yosuke's wallet, meat is a big part of her life. While there's obviously much more to her than just kicking things and eating steak, falling back on this particular love tends to be a point of comic relief among her friend group. In reality, her love of all things meat stems from her high-energy lifestyle. After all, a girl needs her protein if she's going to uphold justice!
